Those being screened will meet with PMC orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Pugh and will receive a free hip or knee X-ray to determine if they are candidates for knee/hip replacement surgery.
An educational seminar focusing on the need for hip/knee replacement surgery, as well as expectations pre- and post-operation, will begin at noon.
Free refreshments will be provided.
Osteoarthritis, also known as "wear and tear" arthritis, is the ongoing breakdown of the joint's natural shock absorbers.
People who are 40 years of age or older, overweight or have experienced a joint injury are at higher risk for developing osteoarthritis.
Joints most commonly affected by osteoarthritis are the knees, hips, spine, fingers, thumb, neck and big toe.
Symptoms of osteoarthritis usually develop over time and may include joint pain, soreness or stiffness. When in the hands, bony enlargements may develop in the fingers.
Currently, there is no cure for osteoarthritis, but effective treatment (including exercise, medicine and surgery) may help relieve symptoms and improve function.
To pre-register for PMC's free osteoarthritis screening, or for more information about osteoarthritis treatment, call the Pikeville Medical Orthopedic Center at 606-432-1547.
Walk-ins are welcome.
